A security guard as defined in Article 7A of the General Business Law [§89-f (6)] is a person (other than an active police officer) employed in NYS to principally perform one or more of the following duties, and the person is not performing the functions of a private investigator as defined in Section 71 of Article 7 of the General Business Law:
- protection of persons and/or property from harm, theft, and/or unlawful activity;
- deterrence, observation, detection, and/or reporting unlawful or unauthorized activity;
- street patrol service;
- response to, but not installation or service of, a security system alarm
Q: Does First-Rate Security offer part time opportunities?
Yes. First-Rate Security offers part time and full time Security Jobs for all shifts, to qualified candidates.
Q: What kind of security job training will First-Rate Security provide?
All security guards receive basic pre-assignment training, on site training, and annual refresher courses. Additional security job training is provided based on the location or industry for which the security guard is assigned. First-Rate Security also provides customized security job training based on our client's specific request.
Q: Does our company offer opportunities for advancement?
Yes. First-Rate Security takes great pride in the fact that we promote from within. The majority of our operation positions are filled with employees who have successfully graduated from within our ranks.
Q: Does our company offer employment and performance incentives?
Yes. First-Rate Security offers an employee referral program to reward employees who refer new hires. In addition we have employee recognition and award programs to reward exemplary performance. We also provide free uniforms, vacation time and additional incentives to our employees.
Q: Some security companies only pay every two weeks. How often do First-Rate Security employees receive paychecks?
Our payroll is weekly. The week starts on Monday and ends on Sunday night. We distribute paychecks every Friday, either to the individual sites, by mail or direct deposit.

Security Guard Requirements in New York
In order to become a security guard in the State of New York, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a citizen or resident alien of the U.S.
- Pass an FBI background check (with no serious convictions or felonies)
- Submit your fingerprint through L-1 Enrollment Services (more on this below)
- Take an 8-hour “pre-assignment” training course, which you must complete and pass prior to applying to the Department of State for a Security Guard Registration Card.
After you have your registration card in your hand, you can begin work as a security guard. Within the first 90 days after employment, you must complete an additional 16 hours of on-the-job training.
Every year after that you are required by law to complete an additional 8 hours training to keep your registration valid.
For your security guard training, please contact any of the following approved security guard schools in New York (PDF file). The schools on this approved list can be used for the 8 hour pre-assignment training, your 16 hours of additional on-the-job-training, as well as your annual maintenance training. School fees will apply.
Employment Qualifications
Applicants must not be convicted of a felony.
Applicants must not be convicted of a misdemeanor crime of moral turpitude.
Applicants must have a valid New York State drivers license.
Applicants must be able to speak, read and write the English language (Bilingual applicants is a plus).
Applicants must be at least 21 years of age.
Applicants must have adequate hearing and vision to perform security related jobs/positions.
Applicants must have transportation.
Applicants must be drug free.
Applicants must have a valid phone number.
Applicants for Employment must be willing to work nights, weekends and holidays.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal aliens with permanent residence in the U.S.
Applicants must have a valid NYS Security Guard License.
Applicants must be physically fit to stand, walk or patrol the majority of their shift.
